Make the Most of the Media
Getting the media involved with your VisionWalk can be a major contributor to its success! Whether it’s through television, radio, newspapers, or online, spreading the word about your VisionWalk is a great way draw new participants and supporters of our cause. Following are some examples of media coverage from the last season of VisionWalks across the country.
On September 25, 2009, Jason Morris, whose son Jack is affected by retinitis pigmentosa, participated in an interview with his local FOX affiliate station to promote the 3rd Annual St. Louis VisionWalk. His interview aired on television, and was posted to FOX’s website as well. You can easily connect with local media and participate in interviews, too. Check out our tips for securing and completing an interview here.
In November 2009, this article featuring the inaugural Des Moines VisionWalk was run in The Gazette. A great way to get local newspapers to print stories about your VisionWalk is to tell a compelling story that will draw readers in and inspire them to get involved. In this article, Holly Lindaeur is motivated to spread awareness about retinal degenerative diseases not only because she is suffering from vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa, but also because her 5-year-old son is dealing with vision impairment as well.
